It varies depending on the atom type and isotope , and is usually determined experimentally. See List of nuclides. For this example the term half time tends to be used, rather than "half life", but they mean the same thing. In a chemical reaction , the half-life of a species is the time it takes for the concentration of that substance to fall to half of its initial value. In non-exponential decay[ edit ] The term "half-life" is almost exclusively used for decay processes that are exponential such as radioactive decay or the other examples above , or approximately exponential such as biological half-life discussed below. In a decay process that is not even close to exponential, the half-life will change dramatically while the decay is happening.

For example, rock layers show the sequence of geological events, and the presence and amount of radioactive elements in rocks make it possible to determine their ages. Analyses of rock formations and the fossil record are used to establish relative ages. In an undisturbed column of rock, the youngest rocks are at the top, and the oldest are at the bottom. Rock layers have sometimes been rearranged by tectonic forces; rearrangements can be seen or inferred, such as from inverted sequences of fossil types.

Print Irakli Loladze is a mathematician by training, but he was in a biology lab when he encountered the puzzle that would change his life. It was in , and Loladze was studying for his Ph. Against a backdrop of glass containers glowing with bright green algae, a biologist told Loladze and a half-dozen other graduate students that scientists had discovered something mysterious about zooplankton. Scientists found that they could make algae grow faster by shining more light onto them—increasing the food supply for the zooplankton, which should have flourished. When the researchers shined more light on the algae, the algae grew faster, and the tiny animals had lots and lots to eat—but at a certain point they started struggling to survive.

Well I suppose it is significant that the religions of other cultures that predated the appearance of the Jews also had some form of that golden rule notion in their own religious teachings. Its possible that the Hebrew group got the notion from those pre-existing cultures, though there is no way to say. But what I am pointing out is the importance of Judeo/Christians actually teaching that notion to like a billion people in millions of synagogues and Sunday school classes for a couple thousand years throughout western culture. I assume in your own culture. Who else can you point to in western culture doing that over that time period? And if you value that golden rule notion, why would you not celebrate that?
